The Research Committee 24 on Environment and Society (RC24) of the International Sociological Association (ISA) has been proactively promoting environmental sociology to wider sociological communities and thus encouraging stronger interest in global societies’ interaction with the environment. Since 2007, environmental sociologists, scholars and students across disciplines in East Asia has expanded this network, with academic representatives from Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and China establishing the biennial “International Symposium on Environmental Sociology in East Asia” (ISESEA). This international symposium has established a strong tradition of providing an academic platform for researchers and practitioners interested in East Asia and beyond to facilitate the exchange of ideas, exploration of new approaches, and development of professional networks.
The 10th ISESEA, marking Taiwan's third time to host the symposium, will be organized by the Risk Society and Policy Research Center (RSPRC), College of Social Sciences, National Taiwan University, under the support of ISA RC 24. The symposium will be held from 31 October to 2 November, 2025, under the theme "Transboundary Climate and Environmental Governance in East Asia."
Following the success of ISESEA-9 in Yokohama, Japan, which explored the uniqueness and diversity of environmental sociology in East Asia, the upcoming symposium will expand the discussions of transboundary risk governance from an East Asian perspective while openly accepting diverse global viewpoints. This is particularly relevant as we are facing multiple layers of risk in the intersection of East Asia and the world, from climate change and air pollution to nuclear disasters, nuclear waste management, food safety, and emerging technologies. We aim to facilitate meaningful academic exchanges among scholars from various countries and regions.
